Mormon Discussion: 344: Vaping, Coffee & Tea, Marijuana and an Irrational God

Today we discuss the August 2019 New Era Article on Vaping, Coffee, Tea, Marijuana, and Opioids.  Todays episode dives into the logic of why each item is forbidden and how that logic not only differs with each other thaey also make little sense when juxtaposed against other substances that are not banned and even supported by the Church that easily fall into the same reasoning.  In the end it doesn’t seem to be about which substances are harmful, which are addictive, and at times the why isn’t even stated while at the same time some of the banned substances are actually shown to be good for you.

  1. Alma 46:40

40 And there were some who died with fevers, which at some seasons of the year were very frequent in the land—but not so much so with fevers, because of the excellent qualities of the many plants and roots which God had prepared to remove the cause of diseases, to which men were subject by the nature of the climate

  2. Hi,
I enjoy your content and I am probably going to contribute monetarily. I have a question and a request:

    1. Can I contribute just to you or does the donation go to all 7 podcasts and is shared?

    2. Please, please, please, please, please STOP using the word “impose”. Part of the time you are not even using it correctly. Use the word “propose” more and “impose” less.

  3. When my mom and I moved to Portland from Utah, she found that coffee helped her severe digestion issues. She discovered coffee and relief for the first time in 48 years.

In her temple interview with the bishop he refused to give her a temple recommend because of it. She reached in her bag and pulled out the oxy that was given to her for her back surgery and said, “but this is fine?” He said absolutely.

She gave him a ‘Yeah, ok because THAT makes sense face’ and said she refused to be kept from the temple for a drink that has given her more benefits than the “approved” chemical prescriptions that were harming her.

He gave in and let her have it. She told me later that she was MORE annoyed that he actually gave in that easy, proving to her that the gospel was arguable and not actually concrete! Double edged sword. She ended up leaving the Church as I did about 2 years later.
